Feb 2024

Dear Chapter Members,

I hope this message finds you in good spirits.  I wanted to take a moment to reach out with some reflection on recent activities NJCMA has hosted.

Thank you to those who attended the Atlantic City Conference, over 170 of our peers gathered representing 45 different clubs.  Special thanks to Rosemary Panno and our Education Committee for the countless hours managing the details of this event. Additionally, the two sessions following that workshop boasted record numbers of participation.  Sharing insights, resources and experiences strengthens our bonds.

Professional development comes in many forms, whether it's attending workshops and seminars, pursuing certifications, taking online courses, or simply engaging in meaningful conversations with industry peers.  Each of these avenues presents an opportunity for us to broaden our horizons, acquire new perspectives, and stay ahead of the curve.

Together, we can reach new heights and achieve our full potential.  Remember, the journey of professional development is not a sprint but a marathon.  Let's be sure to inspire each other and celebrate our successes along the way.

Best,

Holly Bilotti, CCM

President, NJCMA

General Manager of Bay Head Yacht Club

Dear Fellow NJCMA Members,

The entire private club community lost a dear friend this past week with the passing of Glen Ridge Country Club General Manager Rory Doherty.  I know that I can speak for many chapter members when I say I am heartbroken over his passing.  The NJ Chapter sends our love out to his family and mourns his tragic loss.  Rory was a rising star in the club industry and he will be missed dearly.  If you had a chance to read the letter from the Glen Ridge President about Rory he spoke about how Rory's goal was to bring Glen Ridge Country Club from good to great.  I challenge everyone to carry on Rory's legacy by trying to be a little better at everything you do.  Glen Ridge Country Club is setting up a trust fund for Rory's Children.  I will forward details to the chapter members when I have more information.

I hope everyone had been enjoying the beautiful weather this summer, and has been able to resume some sense of normalcy with their friends and family. While things continue to remain uncertain during these times, one thing remains true, we are all in this together and will come out stronger than before.

Please join me in wishing current NJCMA Board Member, Michael Nyerges, the best of luck as he will be taking his talents to the Baltimore Country Club.  Michael has accepted the position of Assistant General Manager and I couldn't be happier for him.  Michael has served on the board for the last four years and has done an amazing job.  Michael has served as our Communications Chairperson and should be commended for his work on the new chapter website and app. Michael has also vastly improved the chapter's presence on social media.  In addition, Michael served as our Student Chapter Liaison.  As a Fairleigh Dickinson alumnus, Michael was able to relate to the current student body.  He developed a student-manager mentor program that allowed students an opportunity to develop their club management network.  Michael you will be missed.

Holly Bilotti is working on finalizing the chapter education calendar for the remainder of the year. In the meantime Holly has scheduled a virtual session for Thursday, September 10th at 10am, "Your Leadership Challenges Right Now", hosted by CMAA Career Coaches, Kevin MacDonald and Shelley MacDougall.

Please join us for a much needed night out as the Chapter is hosting a night of networking at Top Golf in Edison on Tuesday, September 29th.  Space is limited so please register on the chapter app.  There is no cost associated with attending this event.  I strongly urge those who have not had the opportunity to visit a Top Golf to attend.

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, National has decided to host their annual Leadership Legislative Conference virtually this year from September 9th-September 10th. Registration is $295 and includes all sessions and program materials.

In addition to LLC, CMAA is also hosting the Mid-Management Conference and Communication Summit virtually this year.  This is an outstanding opportunity to attend world class education sessions at a fraction of the cost.

New Jersey Wine Society Chairman, James Creamer is working on hosting a few outdoor Wine Society lunches over the early part of the fall season.  We hope to see some New Jersey Wine Society members on September 15th, at David Burke's at Orange Lawn Club for a K Vintners Luncheon.  Marisa Sabastiani will be showcasing K Vintners Walla Walla Valley WA wines, which is owned by iconic winemaker, Charles Smith.

The International Wine Society holds an annual Wine Program Award that recognizes the best club wine programs.  The awards are meant to be a hallmark of quality and assurance of an eminent wine program.  Awards are given in the categories of Merit and Distinction. On the 100-point scale, an Award of Merit is achieved when a club scores between 80 and 89, and an Award of Distinction is achieved when a club scores a 90 or above.  Please visit https://www.cmaa.org/communities/wine-society/awards.html, if you would like to enter your club's wine list in the 2020 Award Program. Entries are due Thursday, October 1st.

I'd also like to make everyone aware of the Warren Arseneaux Honorary Wine Scholarship.  The New Jersey Chapter has had two of the past three winners of this prestigious wine scholarship.    Please encourage any CMAA International Wine Society member who has a current CMAA Professional status and who is dedicated to professional development in the area of the knowledge of wine to apply.  The scholarship covers all costs associated with the Food & Wine BMI, or other approved Wine Education.  Entries are due, Thursday, October 1st.  Please visit the link below for more information.

In addition to the national wine list award, the New Jersey Wine Society will be awarding the Fifth Karl G. Habib Wine Scholarship this fall.  This wine scholarship is dedicated to former NJCMA Board member Karl Habib, who founded the chapter's local wine society.  Any NJCMA mid-manger with a passion for wine are encouraged to apply.  Entries are due Thursday, October 1st, 2020.  /member-home/wine-society

NJCMA Board member Ryan Foo, CEC, is creating a NJ Club Chefs group that will focus on education and networking opportunities for all Chefs that work at NJCMA clubs.    He is working on an inaugural zoom meeting, scheduled for late September.

As one door closes with the summer coming to an end, another door will open up again with the addition of indoor dining. The board is looking forward to kicking off the fall season and hopefully continuing the trend of increased indoor activities.  We are hoping to move towards more in person chapter events, we will provide more information about future events in the coming weeks.
