Life Story

Born in Schmollen, Germany (which today is part of Poland), Hubert set out after WWII ended to build a career in the hospitality business. With his initial goal of becoming a multi-lingual Maître d’Hotel, Hubert set out to Belgium to learn French. From there he went to England to learn English. From there he took a job offer in Bermuda, instead of going on to Spain and Italy to learn Spanish and Italian. In Bermuda, Hubert met Daphne. After agreeing to marry, they emigrated to the U.S. where Hubert took the job as Assistant Manager at the Metairie Country Club, just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Hubert and Daphne married in 1961 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where Hubert went on to manage the Baton Rouge Country Club for 20 years. In 1983 Hubert moved his family to Ridgewood, NJ after he accepted the position of General Manager at the Ridgewood Country Club. In 1988 Hubert moved his family to West Caldwell, NJ where he took the position of General Manager at the Essex Fells Country Club in Essex Fells, NJ. In 1997 Hubert retired at the age of 70.

In retirement Hubert enjoyed ushering and other activities at his church, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Essex Fells, NJ, and international folk dancing with his wife.

Hubert’s family will miss him mostly for his love of food (especially sweets), his free advice on any and every topic, and his inability to tell a joke properly (i.e., giving the punch line in the middle instead of at the end of the joke).

May Hubert’s soul rest in peace amongst his loved ones who have passed on before him.
