Don’t Miss the Certification Window
By Burt Ward, CCM, CCE
Did you join CMAA prior to January 1, 2008? If so you have an opportunity to qualify for the Certified Club Manager exam that for some will have less BMI, and slightly different education requirements. If you were a member prior to January 1, 2008 you must take the CCM exam prior to, or at, the World Conference in 2014. After that time all members will be required to meet the new certification requirements.
One of the two main changes is the additional requirement to attend either BMI Food and Beverage or BMI Golf. It is hoped that if you have a strong food and beverage background that you will broaden your educational background and take the BMI Golf. If you have a strong sports background, or come from the golf side of the industry, that you will take the BMI Food and Beverage. This requirement will be for all candidates regardless of educational background.
The other major change is that there will only be two paths to fulfill the requirements. There are currently three paths; Hospitality Degree, Non-Hospitality Degree, and No Degree. Under the new guidelines there will not be distinction between a Non-Hospitality Degree and No Degree.
I urge you to look at your credit history and develop a plan that will allow you to attain your CCM. While 2014 may seem a long time away it takes time to put all of the pieces together. Detailed information can be found at www.cmaa.org.
